Reflective Surfaces - Light, Reflection and Refraction

This is a directed study of practicing on different types of texture. This drawing is very successful on portraying the shapes of each objects through the shading. The value of the light and dark is just perfect to preform the contrast. The texture on the objects can be identify very easily. The best one on this picture is the glass, I did well on both reflection and refraction, the image perfectly shows the transparency. And I was also successful on building up the metal texture on the tiny can, showing the detail of reflection on the shiny surface. Other reflective objects, like the ceramics cup, plastic and the art eraser are not bad. The contrast of light and dark on the rifts of the art eraser and the folds on the fabric are presenting quite well. I disappointed with the box which at the top left corner. The shading and form are fine, but the outline is too strong, it makes the box less realistic.

Arrangements and composition

This drawing is a study of composition. I took about 30 minutes to finish it. In the image, the arrangement is good because the objects are overlapping on others, there are no orphaned or kissing objects. And the small box is extrude little bit from the edge of the large box, it makes the image more interesting. The primary focal point is on the hair spray. Then the can and the cup are the area of interest. The drawing present precis shape of both five objects. It also shows great form through the shading of the objects which help to identify the objects. The value of the light and dark clearly shows the texture. I think the reflection of the cup is the best part of texturing. And the shadow between the objects also perfectly shows the depth, that creates a wonderful illusion of three dimensional space in the picture. But it is not a very good composition, because there is no negative space, the object does not connect to the background.

Shape and Form 2

This is again about shape and form, but this time is focusing on shading and study how the light act on objects. This drawing is finished by charcoal which allow me do the shading very quickly. First of all, the shapes are very accurate on both geometric objects and the cloth. I was really successful in portraying the light and dark areas of the folds on the cloth, the contrast between them produced realistic farcical texture. There are three focus point to grab attentions, the main focus point is the cloth, its fold's shading is the most interesting part of the whole drawing. then the two focus point is the cone, another one is the cylinder and the cuboid. I also successful in creating the reflection on the left of the cone, it makes the cone more realistic. On the other hand, the dark negative space form a strong contrast with the objects and the cloth, it also emphasizes them, let them more standout.

Shape and Form 1

The first drawing is a study of shape, focused on the outline and silhouette. This drawing clearly present the shape of the object by negative spaces, the contour and the silhouette is outlined accurately. The two small objects at the both left and right, and the largest is at the middle, it balanced the composition, also it created a strong focusing point to the middle of the whole picture. The lines where the objects reach each other are ignored, it does not show the depth and the distance between those objects. However, I think the value of the negative space is not enough, it looks a bit messy.

The second drawing is a study of  form, about using of light, shadow and surface. This drawing is firstly start with putting inner contour line on their surface which better understanding the form of the objects. I think the drawing is showing the form very well, the shapes are precis and the inner contour lines are accurate. It has a main focus point which is the biggest vase. But I kind of disappointed with the shading. Although it help to show the form, it does not present the texture of each object very good.

Planning a drawing, more perspective

This is one of my direct study drawings which focused on planning, positioning and composition. It took me around 45 minutes. This drawing portray precis shape of both three objects. It also shows great form through the shading of the objects, especially the reflection on the electric kettle, it perfectly shows the texture. And the shadow between the three objects also perfectly shows the distance between each other. The background is much darker than the objects, it form a great contrast with them. The box is at left front, the roll at the right and the electric kettle is at the back, their position together and the contrast balanced the whole picture, formed composition. But I am quite disappointed with the shadow at the left that from the box and the electric kettle, because it seems little bit too dark and lost the relationship with the background, it looks like floating in the air.

Basic marks, perspective

This drawings is a study of points, lines, curves, gradient and the principles of two-point perspective. Every single things here, such as points, straight lines, vertical lines, horizon lines, slope line, polygons, circles, curves and the gradients are the basic of observational drawing.Practicing with the basic mark helped to develop my personal basic drawing stills. And perspective is a realistic way of drawing object in three- dimension which begin with two vanishing points and a horizon line. I think the box that I drew is successful in showing the shape and the shading, the value of light and dark on the box is adequate. However, I think lines on the practices are not very precise, they are not straight lines. And also the circles are not look like circles. But on the other hand, I think I did quite well at the gradients, successfully show the changing between light and dark.
